Lawyer Overview

Jim Karen's practice encompasses the full range of general litigation matters, with particular emphasis in the areas of complex corporate and commercial litigation and class actions. He also serves as the litigation practice coordinator in the Dallas Office.

Jim has handled a variety of disputes for major corporations, including IBM, Trammell Crow Company, Frito-Lay, PepsiCo, Texas Instruments, Yum! Brands, The Stanley Works, USAA, Airlines Reporting Corporation, KFC, Pizza Hut, Bridgestone/Firestone, Xerox, EDS, Hotels.com, Expedia, Hotwire, and Alderwoods Group, among other companies. These disputes have involved corporate governance, antitrust, securities, real estate, trademark and intellectual property, banking, regulatory, toxic tort, insurance coverage, construction, and other issues.

Jim primarily handles nationwide multidistrict litigation and class actions. He is currently lead counsel for Expedia and its sister brands in class action lawsuits around the country relating to the "merchant model" currently utilized by the online travel industry. He also represents Bridgestone/Firestone in a putative nationwide class action lawsuit relating to shop supplies charges. In 2007-2008, Jim was lead counsel for a large publicly traded company in pursuing claims related to its acquisition of a leading provider of human resources products and services. Following a three-week arbitration, Jones Day's client secured a judgment of more than $57.5 million. Jim also recently completed the representation of the same company by securing the dismissal of some 20 putative class action lawsuits seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages that had been consolidated in federal district court in Washington, D.C. The order dismissing all claims has been affirmed by the D.C. Circuit.

Jim has significant experience in jury and bench trials, injunction matters, and arbitrations. He has tried numerous lawsuits and arbitrations throughout the United States, including approximately 15 jury trials and more than 30 bench trials and arbitrations. In addition, he has handled preliminary injunction hearings, class certification hearings, and state and federal appellate arguments.
