Lawyer Overview

Charlie Oellermann oversees the business restructuring and reorganization practice in Jones Day's Columbus Office. His practice focuses primarily on corporate bankruptcy, restructuring, and other insolvency-related matters.

Charlie has played an active role in Jones Day's representation of debtors, creditors' committees, and other parties in large corporate restructurings across the country. He has been extensively involved in the representation of the debtors in the chapter 11 cases of National Century Financial Enterprises, HQ Global Holdings, Loewen Group International, Montgomery Ward Holding Corp., The Clothestime, Inc., and Baldwin Builders. Other significant client matters include the representation of: WL Ross & Co. as the leader of a noteholder investor group that acquired the operating assets of coal producer Horizon Natural Resources out of chapter 11, Federated Department Stores as purchaser of R.H. Macy & Co. in its chapter 11 case, and the official committee of unsecured creditors in the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation cases.

Charlie also has provided insolvency-related advice to many Firm clients in litigation and transactional contexts and has participated in a number of out-of-court restructurings. In addition, he counsels clients regularly on fraudulent conveyance, illegal dividend, preferential transfer, fiduciary duty, and corporate veil piercing issues as well as the structuring and consummation of spin-offs, secured financings, distressed mergers and acquisitions, and other transactions.

Charlie is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Columbus Bar Association. He was selected as one of the "Ohio Super Lawyers" of 2005, 2006, and 2007 by Law & Politics and Cincinnati Magazine and was recognized in the 2006 and 2007 editions of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business for his debtor-oriented work.
